The Heavy Metal Magazine Relaunch Rocks Kickstarter

Last month, The World’s Greatest Illustrated Magazine of Sci-Fi, Fantasy and Horror Heavy Metal relaunched with a brand new #1 issue on the Kickstarter platform. This smash hit launch was supported by over 10,000 backers marking a triumphant return for the legendary brand. In this interview Tyler talks to Executive Editor Dave Kelly and Editorial Manager Chris Thompson about this massive launch and the exciting future of Heavy Metal Magazine.

Dave Kelly is executive editor of the world’s greatest illustrated fantasy magazine, Heavy Metal. His love for the mag began decades ago with trading cards from the movie and back issues from a used bookstore in his native Kansas. After more than a decade in comics publishing, he feels the prophecy has now been fulfilled joining this epic relaunch. He splits his time between the US and Europe and has the broken suitcase wheels to prove it.

Chris Thompson is an Eisner Award-winning comics retailer, podcaster and publishing veteran. After spending years at Titan Comics, where he launched the Statix Press line of European titles – followed by a stint at Eaglemoss Hero Collector and working with various other publishers. He brings his talents and connections to Heavy Metal magazine as Editorial Manager for the relaunch. Originally from Australia, he read his first issue of Heavy Metal at far too young an age in 1985 – thanks to a wayward but influential friend – and immediately became a Philippe Druillet devotee, whom he eventually met and spent time with in his Paris studio. Chris recently moved from London to Sicily, in order to deepen his European connections and experience ‘la dolce vita’.
